New Delhi, India - 2-5 March 2010
Based on report by SETatWork Partner, KanEnergi
One of the main forums for information and exchange on CDM / JI is the Methane to Markets Conference. In 2010, this was held on 2-5 March in New Delhi, India, and attracted participants from around the world. Lots of seminars were arranged in the main areas: agriculture, landfills, oil/gas and coal mines. A total of 132 completed and potential projects with great potential for reduction of methane emissions were presented. The main areas are agriculture, landfills, oil / gas and coal. The total estimated annual emission reductions are 17,300,000 MTCO2eq. The main sector is coal mines with a potential of 12,000,000 MTCO2eq.
Methane to Markets currently has 36 partner countries including following European countries: Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, UK and Ukraine. It covers potential projects on all continents within the methane area where European technology should be implemented more widely.
Because methane is such a powerful greenhouse gas, the potential of carbon dioxide reduction is huge in the large number of presented projects. In total, more than 130 different projects were seeking partners and funding. In terms of volume, coal mines projects are those with highest potential of methane reduction and most sites are located in China, Mexico, India and Ukraine. 39 projects in coal mine business were presented. The next largest sector is landfills. 54 different project opportunities were offered, mostly to be found in South America: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico. In addition, also India has many project opportunities.
