March 2008
A further thirteen T@W Project Idea Notes (PINs) were added to the website in March 2008. They include 4 pelleting projects (in Malaysia, Thailand, India and China), plus and additional 9 projects in China covering hydro power, wind power, waste treatment and utilisation of waste and waste heat for energy.

The objective of this project includes promoting technology through CDM for production of bioethanol from Sweet Sorghum and using the residues trashes and bagasse for making agri-pellets. These pellets will be co-fired in a coal power plant for energy production.
Activities will include promotion of the pelletiser technology for making grains and sugar juice, pellets directly from humid agriculture residues and
baggases generated from sweet shorghum plantations, as well as production of the ethanol from the sweet sorghum.

A new technology allows to pelletise mixed and humid biomass without (thermal) drying, so low energy pelletising of agricultural residues becomes possible. Pelletising is important for large biomass projects, where collection and transport costs become important, as it allows to obtain high energy density and good storability of the biomass.
Co-firing these pellets with coal in power plants is relatively easy, requiring low investments: 8 Euro/kW for the plant adaptation + investment for the agri-pellets plant. These pelletisers can be located decentrally near rich biomass resources, while the pellets can be transported conveniently. Therefore, it can lead to large scale projects, justifying overhead costs for CDM and a ROI of at least 0.15.
The project will combine processing of agricultural residues in a region where these are massively burned in the fields, the Yangtze river, which will also be the vector of the pellet transport from pelletisers to the coal power plants (which need a place at the river). It will mobilize investors in the EU to set up de production capacity of pellets and to realize co-firing about 1 million ton/year of "agri-pellets" in some of the largest coal plants.

The objective is to promote environmentally sound CDM technology for decentralised ethanol production and using the residues of the Sweet Sorghum to make agri-pellets and co-firing them in a coal power plant for energy production in India.
The activities will include promotion of pelletising technology for making of the agri-pellets from the agriculture residues and baggase generated from ethanol production, as well as production of ethanol from sweet sorghum.

This project was developed under the collaboration of WST International (Holdings) Limited and Boluo MSW Treatment Co. Ltd. Boluo company is the research base of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion for solid waste treatment and Refuse Derived Fuel Production and application. Basing on Boluo existing waste treatment plant site, a full size 500 Ton per day waste sorting system will be installed through the implementation of this project. From the operation start it will process 300 ton per day MSW from Boluo and the will receive MSW from other nearby districts as well.

Guangdong Iron&Steel Group Co.,Ltd occupying an area of 83,200m², is located in the southern suburb of Shaoguang city. It is one of the "500 largest industrial enterprises" and the "512 national key enterprises" in China. It is also awarded as the "first level audit enterprises" by national auditing bureau and the "superfine credit enterprises" by China Industry&Commerce Bank is the best base for Guangdong's steel industry development because of its advantages: entering into the different-level steel market with large potentials; lying in the traffic hinge of four provinces: Xiang province, Gui province, Yue province and Gong province, and neighboring the two big railways, "Jing-Guang line" and "Jing-Jiu line", and closing to two metropolises, Hongkong and Guangzhou; having abundance materials, such as iron ore, limestone and so on, in the area 100km within its location; having a technical group of more than 4000 persons, which is the most powerful treasure for development.

This project will be constructed in the industrial park. There are many public infrastructures such as railway-used station, thermal power plant and sewage disposal plant. In this project, corn is mainly used as the main material and other facility such as corn syrup, ferment workshop, distillery. It is expected that the total sewage amount will be 6000m³/d. the water will meet the following requirements: CODcr: 16000mg/L BOD5: 12120mg/L SO42-: 800mg/L SS: 25000mg/L pH: 4.0-5.0o the water after disposal will be: COD≤500 mg/L BOD ≤200 mg/L SS ≤150mg/L pH6-9; in total the recycle of methane will amount to 55176m3/do

This wind farm lies in Guangdong Province. 33 wind turbines with the nominal capacity of 1500 KW will be installed. That means the total installed capacity amounts to 49.5 MW. It is expected that the annual operation hours are 1660 hours and the total annual electricity generation of 82.16 Gwh will be supplied to the China South Power Grid which is dominated by fossil-fueled power projects. The objective of the proposed project is to generate electricity using state-ofthe-art wind power generation technology and to sell it into China South Power Grid, thus achieving the annual CO2 emission reduction of 70,662 tons
CO2 equivalent.
