Five Good Practice Case Studies Published by T@W

A further five T@W Good Practice Case Studies (GPs) were added to the website in February 2008. They include four projects in Portugal and one in Spain, and relate to biomass cogeneration, solar thermal and PV projects.

GP33: SOLAR XXI building, Lisbon, Portugal

SOLAR XXI is the building of the Department of Renewable Energy of INETI, the National Institute of Engineering, Technology and Innovation. The building was built based in the best use of solar energy, using solar passive and active technologies.
     This project is the result of the cooperation between architects and engineers, where the solutions to improve the energetic efficiency and to use renewable energy resources are integrated in the building architecture.
The building has 1,500 m², mainly offices, meeting rooms and laboratories. The internal space distribution was made based in the solar direct gains. The spaces more occupied during the day (offices) are located in the South of the building and the spaces that have a lower occupation are located in the North (meeting rooms and laboratories). All the building have natural light during the day, due to a skylight situated in the centre of the building. The rooms have openings in the doors that allow transferring heat, by natural convection, between South and North spaces.
     Photovoltaic panels were integrated in the south facade, covering an area of 96 m² with perfect agreement with glazing areas. These panels have a total installed capacity of 12 kWp. To increase the electricity production capacity, photovoltaic panels, with a total installed capacity of about 6 kWp, were integrated in the shading structure of the car parking.

GP32: Portinho da Costa – A Water Treatment Plant with a biogas cogeneration, Portugal

In the Almada Municipality about 100% of the residual water is treated. This goal was concretized due to a strategy of the municipality to cover all council with treatment systems and a good drainage system, for this, this municipality has four Water Treatment Plants. One of this Water Treatment Plants is the Portinho da Costa, which is ecological and transforms residues in energy.
     This Water Treatment Plant has the best and more advanced technologies and, at environmental level, it is very efficient – it has a great treatment efficiency, it is important to mention that the percentage to remove organic substance is superior that 96%; it produces biogas, that is used in a cogeneration system to produce electric energy and heat; it uses the mud to fertilize the land for the agriculture and it reuses the residual water for irrigation of green spaces.

GP31: Solar Thermal Energy System in the Granja Pools, Portugal

In May 2004, ENERGAIA (Municipality Energy Agency of Gaia) and GAIANIMA, E.M. (Entity for the management of municipal equipment) started to work together, aiming the development of renewable energy projects that had a strategic importance to the Municipality. These projects intent to have great visibility in the society and make possible important reductions in the invoices of energy of the municipal equipment. In the following months the work was focused in the conception of a solar thermal system, in the definition of the times of reference for the choice of the installer, in the choice of the financing model and in the preparation of the proposals for MAPE (National Programme for Energy from the Portuguese Ministry of the Economy).

GP30: Cogeneration System, Portugal

The creation of Powercer took place in 2003 as a result of a process initiated by the Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas, which aimed at the improvement of the economic conditions related with the steam consumption of the plant. The first step was the elaboration of an outsourcing contract for the construction and exploitation of a new cogeneration system. For this, the Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas started negotiations with several entities, selecting Galp Power and Finerge as promoters of the project’s development. The Galp Power and Finerge created the Powercer society.
     Through a public tender the cogeneration system was installed, integrating the existing boilers, in a management system to produce the steam needed.
     Due to the high efficiency of the cogeneration system the old boilers work in standby, they are used only to support the CHP system to cover the peaks.
     Currently the production management is held by Powercer.

GP29: 50 MW Parabolic Collector Solar Project in Sanlucar, Spain

Solúcar will build during the next seven years the biggest solar platform in Europe in the surroundings of Sanlúcar la Mayor (Seville). Nine plants will be installed using different technologies like the thermoelectrical tower and heliostat field, parabolic cylinder, Stirling disc and photovoltaic with high and low concentration. Total power capacity will be 302 MWe. Among these
technologies, specially relevant is the parabolic cylinder collector plants described in this sheet.
