Biofuels TP Strategic Research Agenda and Strategy Deployment Document

The Biofuels Technology Platform Stakeholder Plenary Meeting was held at the Diamant Conference Centre in Brussels on 31 January 2008, and attended by over 300 delegates. The event saw the launch of the Biofuels TP Strategic Research Agenda and Strategy Deployment Document.

Although the conference dealt specifically with Liquid Biofuels for Transport, it raised a number of issues related to sustainable production and use of biomass and bioenergy which are applicable to the use of Biomass and Bioliquids within the Emissions Trading Scheme, including an overview of the political framework from:

  • Alfonso Gonzalez Finat (Principal Advisor, European Commission, Directorate General for Energy and Transport) on The European Strategy for Implementation of Biofuels for Transport in Europe (including SET-Plan)

  • Hilkka Summa (European Commission, Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development) on European Agricultural Policies and the Promotion of Biofuel Technologies

  • Lena Ek (Member of the European Parliament) on A View from the European Parliament

  • Ariane de Dominicis (European Commission, Directorate General for Environment) on Biofuels Sustainability in the EU Policy

This was followed by presentations covering the key topics within the SRA and SDD:

  • The Global View: covering The Consultation Process and its Impact on SRA/SDD and Presentation of Key Findings and Recommendations

  • Research, Technical Development & Deployment Priorities: covering Biomass Production and Supply, Conversion Process and End Use

  • Biofuels Sustainability: covering Research and Development needs, an NGO perspective (WWF Europe), EU Policy and Agricultural Commodity Markets

  • Implementing the SRA/SDD: covering Meeting Future Market Demand, 2nd Generation Biofuels, Motor Fuel Quality and Future Engine Requirements

  • Cooperation and Synergies with Other Initiatives: covering interaction with SustChem, Plants for the Future, Biofuels TP National Mirror Groups, EIB (European Investment Bank) and IEA (International Energy Agency)

  • Going Forward for the Biofuels Technology Platform
