Five Good Practice Case Studies Published by T@W
22 November 2007
A further five T@W Good Practice Case Studies (GPs) were added to the website at the end of November 2007. They include four projects in Slovakia and one in the Peoples Republic of China, and all relate to biomass and sustainable heat and power projects.

The Shandong Shanxian Biomass Power Plant Project developed by National Bio Energy Co. Ltd is a biomass collection and utilization project in Shanxian, Shandong Province, P.R.China. The project will generate power using a 1*25MW generator unit. The central boiler system is mainly based on Danish company Burmeister & Wain Energy A/S (hereafter referred to as BWE) which developed this technology. The boiler is produced domestically based on the BWE engineering work. The fuel for this plant is expected to be a combination of cotton and corn straw, with the majority of the energy input from cotton straw. The straw was not utilised before but created a waste problem. Currently the power plant is only producing power, but it is prepared for delivery of heat for district heating as well turning it into a combined heat and power plant.

Coal mining results in release of significant amounts of methane gas to the atmosphere. The gas sequestered near to coal deposits seeps into mine shafts and must be removed to ensure the safety of the mineworkers. Coal Bed Methane (CBM) in the Slovak mines is usually vented to the atmosphere.
The described project uses specialized technology to capture the gas and to utilize it by electricity and heat production. The project aims:
- construction of degassing system
- electricity production for own pconsumption (40% of the captured CH4)
- heat production (50%)
During the project activity approximately 10% of the gas will not be captured due to efficiency of the equipment. The exact amounts will be monitored continuously.
Through the improvement of current drainage systems, the extracted gas will be used for power generation and waste heat recovery.

Before the project brown coal and NG were used for district heating in the city of Hriňová. Some of the fossil fuels have been replaced with biomass which has decreased the amounts of CO2 and other pollutants such as SO2 and PM. Switching from fossil to biomass combustion has also reduced the fuel costs.

The project is to convert a hot water boiler from coal to biomass combustion. Boiler house of company Handlovská energetika s.r.o. with total installed heat input 127,12 MW is located in area of mine facility -Handlovské bane. The generated heat is supplied to this facility as for district heat demand of other residential users.
The installed boilers K-5 and K-6 are dedicated for coal l combustion and auxiliary fuel - NG is used for combustion stabilization, but that are able to operate at 100% NG input too and/or NG combustion Boiler K-1 is furnished by pre= combustion fluidised bed reactor and is used for coal combustion only. The above configuration represents the baseline of projects.
In new project for CO2 abatement framework were in year 2006 installed boiler K-7 type Vesko B 3 MW for hot water generation with thermal input 3,49 MW, dedicated for wood chips combustion and 4 hot water boilers for NG combustion type RAPIDO. Three of them have thermal input 0,600 MW and one of them 0,320 MW. This new configuration enable to decrease the share of cial input, that lead to CO2 decrease.
