SETatWork - Sustainable Energy Technology at Work: Thematic Promotion of Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving Technologies in the Carbon Markets

The SETatWork Project took place from 1 September 2008 to 31 October 2010. Many of its activities continued on from the FP6 Project T@W (1 April 2006 to 31 March 2008), but with a particular emphasis on Energy Efficiency.

Project acronym: SETatWork
Project full title: Sustainable Energy Technology at Work: Thematic Promotion of Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving Technologies in the Carbon Markets
Grant agreement no: TREN/FP7EN/219009/"SETatWork"
Start date of contract: 1 September 2008
Duration: 26 Months

Background

The global society is faced with a huge challenge in order to meet the threat given by global warming. The project SETatWork - Sustainable Energy Technologies at Work aims to meet this challenge through the collaboration and partnerships between organisations in EU, Asia and South America, supported by the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

Objectives

The technology focus of SETatWork will be on energy efficiency and polygeneration in the industry sector, building on the experience obtained under the T@W project. While the continuity is ensured by the involvement of many of the same partners, the industry dimension of the project has been strengthened by the direct participation of industry associations.

Activities

Activities of the SETatWork Project

The core project activities will be:

  • Undertaking training of selected European ETS industry sectors based on prior need assessment. The training is to help the industries on handling the complex of energy and CO2 management and will be performed in Portugal, Bulgaria, Slovakia / Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden - aiming for a total of 14 workshops.
  • An integrated part of the performed training will be to identify opportunities for specific action in the industries for CO2 reduction measures. This is to be achieved by local partners (facilitators) in coordination with relevant industry organisations.
  • Another key project task will consist in identifying Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in markets in China, India, South East Asia (focus on Thailand and Malaysia) and Latin America (focus on Brazil and Chile) in combination with the transfer of European technology and know-how. Part of this activity will be to promote concepts like CDM programmatic approaches that imply good perspectives for improving the CDM, especially in the field of energy efficiency.
  • With regard to both European industry and the CDM markets, the efforts will be accompanied by matchmaking activities in order to facilitate the realisation of the identified opportunities, e.g. to match stakeholders involved in energy efficiency and savings in European industry sectors with project owners and emission rights buyers (in Asia and Latin America) with European technology and service providers.
  • In parallel, the project team will observe the energy efficiency and carbon market development and disseminate the findings as inspiration for market actors and carbon market regulators.
  • The project results will be disseminated via the website and an E-newsletter for distribution via an extensive mailing list. Among the planned dissemination highlights will be the organization of side event(s) with a technology focus in connection with the UNFCCC climate conferences in Poznan 2008 (COP 14) and Copenhagen 2009 (COP 15), encompassing promotion of technology transfer and partner-matching.
Work Packages

SETatWork consists of 6 work packages:

  • WP1 SETatWork Co-ordination: Project co-ordination in line with the FP7 procedures.
  • WP2 Market Observance: The aim of this WP is to extract main findings of the carbon market development, encompassing: RTD needs of relevance for EU research, good practice project examples, identification of m arket failures etc.
  • WP3 RUE Project Identification, Tools & Networking: Comprises identification of energy efficiency and saving projects in European ETS companies and key JI & CDM countries. This will be supplemented with networking activities aiming at positioning EU researchers and market actors at the global carbon market.
  • WP4 Match-making: Building on the identified projects under WP2, this WP will entail a dedicated effort on bringing market actors together for the realisation of projects. This effort will be anchored around European industry organisations and will be supplemented with relevant technical and financial expertise for catalysing sound market operations.
  • WP5 Training & Promotion: This WP will comprise training of industries based on a need assessment. It will also be responsible for the project’s data management and dissemination activities having as focal points a website and regular E-Newsletter aimed at the broad target groups that form the project stakeholders. Additional dissemination and promotion aims will be met via intervention at key carbon market events, notably the Climate Summits in Poland , 2008 and/or Copenhagen , 2009 (depending on the project start date) and production of project promotional materials.
  • WP6 Evaluation and Strategy: Entails monitoring of the progress of the action and an impact assessment during the later stage of the project. Further it involves identifying strategies for further promotion at carbon markets, including export strategies for assisting European technology suppliers. This action be carried out in close coordination with the involved industry and branch organisations.
