Programmes and Projects: Energy Efficiency Guide for Industry in Asia - Results of the GERIAP Project
Website: www.energyefficiencyasia.org
This Guide is the main output of the three year project Greenhouse gas Emission Reduction
from Industry in Asia and the Pacific (GERIAP) to assist Asian companies to become more energy
and cost efficient through Cleaner Production. It has been developed for Asian companies who want to
improve energy efficiency through Cleaner Production and for stakeholders who want to help them.
The Guide includes a methodology, case studies for more than 40 Asian companies in 5
industry sectors, technical information for 25 energy equipments, training materials, a contact and
information database, and much more...
Sections include:
- Where do you start
- How to become energy efficient
- Industry Sectors
- Energy Equipment
For various different types of electrical and thermal energy equipment, this section
provides technical information, options for energy conservation, training materials, case studies,
and useful contacts. You can also find out about the different monitoring instruments available
to assess the efficiency of various types of energy equipment.
- Tools Several tools are available if you want to improve energy efficiency, train your
workforce, or look for useful contacts or information. You can also download information in 5
Asian languages.
In particular the site includes Training materials covering:
- Company Energy Efficiency Methodology
- Climate Change
- Energy equipment
- Industry Sectors
- Financing
- Barriers to Energy Efficiency
and case studies covering:
- nine Asian Countries: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam
- Energy equipment: Electrical, Thermal and Monitoring Equipment
- Industry sectors: Pulp and paper, ceramics, iron and steel, chemicals, cement
More than 40 companies from the cement, chemicals, ceramics, iron & steel and pulp & paper
sectors participated in the project in nine Asian countries.
The GERIAP project components included:
- Capacity building: National Focal Points (NFPs) and participating companies received training
on how to apply CP to identify energy efficiency options for main energy uses in industry
- Demonstration of CP and energy efficiency: CP assessments to find ways to improve energy
efficiency were carried out at the participating companies. Options that were technically feasibly,
financially attractive and reduced energy and GHG emissions were implemented, resulting in sector
specific case studies.
- Survey of barriers to energy efficiency: Why do some companies improve energy efficiency and
others not? A survey assessed the financial, technical, cultural and other factors affecting
businesses, resulting in proposed solutions to overcome the most important regional and national
barriers in Asia.
