DONG Energy was founded in 2006 as the result of a merger involving six Danish energy companies - DONG, Elsam, ENERGI E2, Nesa, Copenhagen Energy's power activities and Frederiksberg Forsyning. DONG Energy are involved in every step, from producing the energy until it is consumed, with core focus of business activities in Northern Europe. DONG Energy's Consolidated profit after tax was in 2006 DKK 4,917 million.

DONG Energy provides services in energy production, trade in energy products and the sale and distribution of energy plus service solutions for more than 1 million customers. DONG Energy offers a wide range of other services, including service agreements, advice on energy use and price monitoring.

The main areas where Dong Energy is active are;

• Exploration for and production of oil and natural gas
• Responsible for the wide range of oil and gas exploration and production activities and hold an interest in some 70 licences covering the exploitation and development of oil and gas reserves
• Electricity and heat production - it has major activities in the field of electricity and heat production. DONG Energy generates electricity and heat at 25 primary and small-scale power stations in Denmark, based primarily on coal and natural gas, yet also including biofuels such as straw, wood pellets, wood chips and municipal waste.
• Distribution - DONG Energy distributes natural gas to nearly 116,000 customers in Denmark are responsible for distributing electricity to 900,000 Danish customers in their grid area.
• Markets - Firmly rooted in the Danish market, DONG Energy has substantially increased its international activities in recent years. DONG Energy focuses on the Northern European market, today selling electricity, natural gas and related products to more than 1 million customers in Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands.
