JIN was established with the aim of creating an information platform for the climate change concept of Joint Implementation (JI) that is included in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change as an instrument for greenhouse gas emissions trading between countries through projects.

A core activity of the network is production and dissemination of the publication The Joint Implementation Quarterly (JIQ), an e-magazine. Its aim is to provide background information and discussions about the latest developments in the field of greenhouse gas emissions trading, both quota-based and project-based emissions trading. The main focus has been on the flexibility mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI), and on the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. JIQ prompts readers to initiate discussions on technical and policy-related topics as follows:
