Based in the first European scientific and technological park of Sophia Antipolis (South of France), CARMA was created in 1994 at the initiative of companies, research laboratories and engineering schools in order to ensure the technological development of the regional SMEs. The main activity is that of a research and innovation centre, specialized in the development of innovative products incorporating components/material of organic or recycled origin. Other activities include training, technology transfer and promotion of the plastics and composite material industry.

Over the years, CARMA has gained recognition for the quality of the research conducted and its ability to entertain the regional network of companies, research laboratories and engineering schools in the material industry. CARMA first launched the acclaimed MIEC exhibition in year 2000, a reference in the industry with regards to bioplastics, biocomposites and other innovative processes available to ensure sustainable development.

An active member in several cooperative projects involving European clusters and regional SMEs, CARMA was awarded the label of Regional Cluster for Innovation and Solidarity-based Economic Development (PRIDES) in March 2007. The innovative materials technologies network includes over 200 companies, technical centres, universities and research laboratories, covering several industry sectors such as shipping, marine, aeronautics, automotive, aerospace, electronics, microelectronics, medical, consumer goods and leisure.
