Introduction

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) as one of the flexible mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol provides a new portal for European companies to undertake greenhouse gas emission reduction activities in developing countries, offers opportunities for European companies to establish new business cooperation with local partners in the host countries as well as helps companies under the EU ETS to meet their respective emission reduction commitments in a cost effective manner.

This is done by allowing credits generated from greenhouse gas emission reduction activities in developing countries to be purchased by private or public entities, to comply with their emission reduction target. At the same time CDM projects must deliver sustainable development impacts in the host country that goes beyond pure emission reductions to support the countries improve their current development patterns.
